Welcome to BANTER; the weekly podcast where we unpack last Sunday's sermon.
Mark's gospel subverts the Messianic expectation... what does that mean!?M&M delve into a prophetic poem in Genesis 49 which reveals how the Jews would have expected a Messiah to look, and contrast this with the songs of the Suffering Servant found in Isaiah 42-52.
The boys also reference some deep cuts of Jewish folklore and history in the figures of Honi the Circle drawer (cooler than he sounds) & Judas "The Hammer" Maccabeus, and of course breakdown Chris Rock being slapped in the face HARD by Will Smith at the Oscars... we're in for a wild ride!To find out more about The Centre visit;http://www.thecentredural.org.au/church/We meet at 10am every Sunday in person and online at;https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrfgVAeXtBlq6BsELAIBEog

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
Mark is the oldest of the four gospels and portrays Jesus as a Suffering Servant. But in a life of privellige and abundance, what does it mean for us to take up our cross and follow Jesus?

This week M&M "dip into" (I'm so sorry) the sacrament of baptism. Mitch highlights a few more key Old Testament precursors to baptism, Murray exposes his pentecostal roots around baptism in the Spirit and the boys delve deeper into differing denominations definition... of baptism. Let's "dive in" (I'm really, really sorry).

Baptism can easily seem like a random ritual which suddenly pops up in the New Testament. In the final week of our "Preparing the Soil" series, Mitch traces the theme of baptism from the very first pages of the Old Testament, all the way through to Jesus.

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." (Gen. 2:15) From the very beginning God gave us the land to take care of, be fruitful and multiply. Out of that comes an overflowing abundance to;"Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine." (Prov. 3:9-10) Mitch explores this deep interconnection of Tithing and Stewardship in all aspects of life.

Mitch & Murray are fresh out of Covid-induced isolation and ready to get down to do what they love; being absolute Bible NERDS! The boys unpack the vivid the imagery of spiritual armour in Ephesians, the theme of serpents in the Bible and the scriptural allusions in Lord of the Rings.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." Welcome to BANTER; the weekly podcast where we unpack last Sunday's sermon.
The Lord's Prayer is one of the most well known passages of scripture, but what was Jesus ACTUALLY saying? What does it mean to "hallow" God's name? And which of His names do we hallow? YHWH? Elohim? Jireh? Abba? Jesus? How do we actually forgive those who sin against us? And how do we make time for prayer when we're always SO BUSY!?

Jesus said to them, "When you pray, say: 'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.'" (Luke 11:2-4)
Prayer is foundational to our relationship with God. Mitch looks first and foremost to Jesus for a framework of prayer, then to some of the biggest names in church history, including Martin Luther, John Wesley and Charles Spurgeon on how prayer can be practically lived out.

It's a stormy old day in Dural, but that doesn't stop M&M from breaking down Sunday's sermon and exploring the importance of small groups and church community. The boys also chat turning 30, pink shirts and reversing that pesky biological clock.

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching."(Hebrews 10:24-25)
The Christian life is best when done in community. Mitch helps expand on what that looks like in practice for all types of relationships, whether a Paul (mentor), TImothy (disciple), or a Barnabas (peer).
